What's your earliest memory of music?
My earliest memory of music is when I was 6 years old. My mom always had her TV on a music video channel. I saw Pharrell Williams in the “Frontin’” video. I just remember my eyes being glued to the screen. I felt hypnotized.
How musical is your family?
My grandfather was a very musical man. He used to write songs in the 1970s. He played guitar. He was the choir director at my church. He really put me on to a lot of good music like Funkadelic, Parliament, Chic, Herbie Mann, and many other fire artists.
Are you the first to pursue music in your family?
No, my grandfather and my 1st cousin, Dejon, are also musicians.
Where are you from?
I’m originally from Memphis, Tennessee, but I’ve lived in Jackson, Mississippi. Now, I live in Atlanta, Georgia.
What do you remember about the first song you wrote and recorded?
The first song I wrote and recorded was called “Elemental” by me and my friend, Biskit. She direct messaged me about getting on the song because she knew I wanted to rap. I just never actually recorded a song. I’d only post freestyles so she sent the beat and taught me how to record on an app on my phone, and it just happened.
.
What was it like creating "Slob On My Kat" the song?
I was in Memphis for the summer with my grandparents, and I was trapped in the house. I had no car, and my grandma is scared of life, so she wouldn’t really take me anywhere, so I was in the room just writing songs. My homie Kyle sent me a beat pack, and I just wrote it one night because I was bored.
What was it like shooting the video?
It was so fun. All of my friends came out and supported me. It was honestly just like a party that just so happened to be getting recorded.
How do you feel about the Pitchfork article?
The Pitchfork article was sick as fuck. I was not expecting that. It makes me very optimistic about where I can go using my talent.
What's next for you?
So much music. I have a couple of collabs and videos in the works, so stay tuned and be ready for Merc to take over.
